The Important Role of Diet in the Management of Hypercholesterolemia and Prevention of Coronary Heart Disease

Professor Brian Tomlinson (Hong Kong Chinese University) with Accredited Dietitians Silvia Lam (Chairman of Hong Kong Dietitians Association) and Vivian Lau (Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital) discusses the current views on dietary treatment of hypercholesterolemia in the June issue of the Journal of the Society of Physicians of Hong Kong. The experts view that "a healthy diet should always form the cornerstone of the management of hypercholesterolaemia and cardiovascular risk. Healthcare professionals have an important role in encouraging their patients to make healthy cholesterollowering dietary changes. Increasing the intake of dietary fibre, replacing saturated fats with unsaturated fats, and adding foods with added plant stanols into the diet are the three key measures by which patients can effectively lower their cholesterol through their diet."

Spanish study confirms long term benefit of plant stanol ester containing yogurt drink

Recently published Spanish study (Párraga-Martínez et al. 2014) confirmed that the daily consumption of a yogurt drink with added plant stanol ester (2 g/d plant stanols) effectively lowered blood LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) throughout a 12-month intervention period. The yogurt drink with added plant stanol ester reduced LDL-C 10%, compared to the control group.

APSAVD was a success

Benecol participated the joint 9th Congress of the Asian-Pacific Society of Atherosclerosis and Vascular Diseases (APSAVD) and the 16th Diabetes and Cardiovascular Risk Factors – East Meets West Symposium (EMWS) in late September 2014.

Benecol foods from Hong Kong as well as from Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines were handed out to the congress delegates from the Benecol exhibition booth. We were happy to see a vast interest towards the effective dietary way to lower cholesterol.

In Benecol sponsored educational lecture, MD, PhD Widjaja Lukito from the SEAMEO Regional Centre for Food and Nutrition, University of Indonesia, presented the results of one of the latest clinical studies on the efficacy of plant stanol ester, the active ingredient of Benecol yogurt drinks.

Dr. Lukito told that in the whole study group, LDL-cholesterol was reduced on average by -8.7%. However, in subjects with a high baseline LDL-C level and high compliance the reduction was greater, i.e. -12.8%.

Thus Dr. Lukito stressed especially the importance of a regular daily use of plant stanol ester.

In her presentation ‘Dietary Advice on Vascular Disease and Diabetes´ Senior Registered Dietician Sylvia Lam reminded also that according to the latest dietary recommendations foods with added plant stanol ester should ideally be included in a healthy cholesterol-lowering diet, especially in the individuals with increased cardiovascular risk.

Benecol raised a lot of interest

Benecol® interested many delegates of EMW Symposium. At times Benecol exhibition stand was very crowded when people wanted to taste Benecol Yogurt Drinks, which were launched in Hong Kong in September, and gather more information about the cholesterol-lowering efficacy of Plant stanol ester, the active ingredient in Benecol products.

Professor Helena Gylling

Professor Helena Gylling, an internationally acknowledged scientist, who has studied plant stanols since the 1980's and published over 250 international scientific publications, gave excellent speech on The Role of Plant Stanol Ester in the Dietary Management of Dyslipidemia.

The happy winners of Benecol lottery were Dr. Hui Kam Wah, Dr. Hung Wai Yin and Ms. Vivian Lau, who have now received their prizes of Finnish design glass. Congratulations!
