Plant stanol ester is derived from nature
In Benecol® products plant stanol is added as Plant stanol ester. Plant stanols used in Benecol products are derived from vegetable sources or from tall oil. Esterification of plant stanols with unsaturated fatty acids of vegetable oils is essential because free plant stanols may not lower cholesterol optimally, and when added to foods, they can form crystals that feel granular in the mouth.
Adding Plant stanol ester to the foods
Plant stanol ester has typical properties of edible fats and it can be easily incorporated into fat containing foods. Plant stanol ester can also be added to various low-fat and fat-free foods.
